Saxenda® (liraglutide) injection 3 mg is an injectable prescription medicine used for adults with excess weight (BMI ≥27) who also have weight-related medical problems or obesity (BMI ≥30), and children aged 12-17 years with a body weight above 132 pounds  and obesity to help them lose weight and keep the weight off. Saxenda® should be used with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Saxenda (liraglutide) is a hormone that acts like a hormone in the body to help regulate blood sugar, insulin levels, and digestion. 

Before using Saxenda

If you are allergic to liraglutide or have any of the following conditions, you should not use Saxenda:

Multiple endocrine neoplasia types 2 (gland tumor) personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer); or a personal or family history of thyroid cancer. Ketoacidosis in people with diabetes (call your doctor for treatment). If you are taking other medicines for diabetes, such as insulin or liraglutide, you should not take Saxenda (albiglutide, dulaglutide, exenatide, Byetta, Bydureon, Tanzeum, Trulicity).

Tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions to make sure Saxenda is safe for you:

digestion slows down due to digestive problems;

kidney or liver disease

blood triglycerides (fat form);

Heart problems;

history of problems with the pancreas or gallbladder; or

history of suicidal ideation or depression

Liraglutide-induced thyroid tumors or animal cancers in studies. It's not clear that similar side effects can occur in people taking regular doses of the drug. Consult your doctor to learn more about your risks. It is not known whether Saxenda will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

It is not clear whether liraglutide passes into breast milk or could harm a breastfed baby. If you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor.

Saxenda is not FDA approved for use by anyone under the age of 18.

Saxenda and Victoza should not be -put together. The active ingredients of these two brands are the same but should not be used together.

Saxenda is given as a subcutaneous injection at any time of the day, with or without food. You will learn to inject yourself at home.

Your doctor will show you how to inject Saxenda into the areas of your body that are most affected. Use a different location each time you inject. Do not repeat the injection in the same place.

Do not use Saxenda if it has changed color or contains particles. Call your pharmacist for new medications.

Increased thirst or urination, blurred vision, headaches, and fatigue are indicators of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).

Stress, illness, surgery, exercise, alcohol, and skipping meals can affect blood sugar levels. Consult your doctor before changing your dose or schedule.

Use only disposable needles. Follow the appropriate state or city regulations regarding the disposal of used needles and syringes. Use a puncture-resistant “sharps” disposal container (ask your pharmacist where to get it and how to dispose of it). Children and dogs should not have access to this container.

Diet, exercise, weight control, regular monitoring of blood sugar, and specialized medical care can all be part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes Saxenda. Pay special attention to your doctor's recommendations.


The Saxenda® dosing schedule

The Saxenda® dosing schedule was designed to help you get the most from your medicine and to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Review the schedule below, and be sure to schedule a 4-month follow-up appointment with your health care provider. Contact him or her sooner if you have questions about dosing or side effects. 

Your prescription of Saxenda® contains enough medicine for 30 days.

Below is a dosing schedule to guide you through the starting dosage of 0.6 mg to the dosage of 3 mg.

Saxenda® dosing schedule

Use Saxenda® exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. After you start Saxenda®, provided you have no issues with tolerating it, your dose should be increased weekly until you reach the 3-mg dose. After that, do not change your dose unless your health care provider tells you to. If you have any questions, call your health care provider.

If you received a sample of Saxenda®, please note that it will last for 17 days. You will need to start a new prescription on day 18, so be sure to fill your prescription right away.

Nausea is the most common side effect when first starting Saxenda®, but decreases over time in most people as their body gets used to the medicine. For additional side effects, please refer to the Medication Guide.

If you miss your daily dose of Saxenda®, use Saxenda® as soon as you remember. Then, take your next daily dose as usual on the following day. Do not take an extra dose of Saxenda® or increase your dose on the following day to make up for your missed dose. If you miss your dose of Saxenda® for 3 days or more, call your health care provider to talk about how to restart your treatment.
